Reels vs photos on Facebook: where the money actually is in 2026

The loudest advice in every operator group is some version of go all in on Reels. The data behind it is real: short-form video gets the strongest algorithmic push on Facebook, reaching non-followers at rates static posts rarely see, and roughly a third of feed content is now recommendations from pages people do not follow. Reels are how new audiences find you.

But all in is a trend follower's phrase, not an operator's. The right question is what mix each page should run, and the answer differs page by page.

What each format is actually for

Reels are a discovery engine. They reach cold audiences, grow followers, and, since the unified Content Monetization Program, they earn from the same performance-based payout as everything else. Their weakness is retention: recommendation traffic is fickle and does not automatically convert to a loyal page audience.

Photos and text posts are a retention engine. They serve the followers you already have, they generate the comments and private shares the payout formula loves, and in niches like local news, humor cards, and informational graphics they still outperform video on engagement quality per view.

Setting the mix per page

  • Growth-stage pages under the monetization threshold: weight heavily toward Reels. Discovery is the job.
  • Monetized pages with strong communities: keep photos and conversation posts in the majority, with Reels as a steady discovery drip.
  • Test by holding cadence constant and shifting only the format ratio for a month. Compare RPM and share rate, not raw reach.
  • Watch the mix report, not the trend piece. Your pages will tell you their own answer.

Reading the mix in one place

Feedrevo's content and platform mix report shows what share of each page's output is Reels versus photos, and what each format earned and reached. When the mix and the money sit on the same screen, the Reels question stops being ideological. It becomes arithmetic.
